Sarah Knight’s most recent documentary, Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend, was produced through a non-profit fiscal sponsor, New York Women in Film and Television (NYWIFT). This enabled the production to offer a 100% tax write-off for each donation. This fundraising approach was met with such success, a similar model has been set up for the production of VINO VERITAS.
New York’s venerable Film Forum, the leading independent film theatre in the country, has graciously offered to provide fiscal sponsorship for VINO VERITAS. The Film Forum’s longstanding support of independent film makes it a perfect fit for VINO VERITAS. All funding given toward the production of VINO VERITAS will qualify as a tax-deductible donation to a non-profit (within income limits), and five percent of contributions will go toward supporting the Film Forum and its various programs.
Here is some additional information about the Film Forum:
Film Forum began in New York in 1970 as an alternative screening space for independent films, with 50 folding chairs, one projector and a $19,000 annual budget. Today, Film Forum is a 3-screen cinema open 365 days a year, with 250,000 annual admissions, 489 seats, 59 employees, 4500 members and a $4.1 million operating budget.
They present two distinct, complementary film programs – NYC theatrical premieres of American independents and foreign art films, and, since 1987, repertory selections including foreign and American classics, genre works, festivals and directors’ retrospectives. Their third screen is dedicated to extended runs of popular selections from both programs, as well as new films for longer engagements.
Film Forum is the only autonomous nonprofit cinema in New York City and one of the few in the U.S. The success of their distinctive position is evidenced by their 40 -year tenure, during which their programs and fiscal resources have grown steadily, while many art-house theaters have closed. They raise approximately 36 percent of their operating income from public and private sources, which allows them to take risks on emerging filmmakers and challenging films. As a cinema of ideas, Film Forum is committed to presenting an international array of films that treat diverse social, political, historical and cultural realities. Unlike commercial cinemas that primarily “book” high-grossing, Hollywood films, Film Forum’s programs are thoughtfully curated, with attention to unique cinematic qualities, historical importance individually or within a genre and, particularly for documentaries, relevance to today’s world.
